GPL 3 with Section 7 Restrictions

Source Code: GPLv3

Section 7 Restrictions

The origin of this software must not be misrepresented; you must not claim that you wrote the original software. Altered source versions must be plainly marked as such, and must not be misrepresented as being the original software. This notice may not be removed or altered from any source distribution.

Plugin Slug

You MUST NOT use wp-fail2ban, wp-fail2ban-premium, or any other existing or future WPf2b family plugin slug for any modified version. You SHOULD prefix the slug — for example, foobar-wp-fail2ban. To prevent conflicts with other plugins in the WPf2b family, you SHOULD NOT suffix the slug.

Plugin Name

You MUST NOT use “WP fail2ban”, “WP fail2ban Premium”, or any other existing or future WPf2b family plugin names for any modified version. You SHOULD prefix the name — for example “FooBar’s Fork of WP fail2ban”. You may use any other clear and unambiguous form indicating your version is not the original.

WordPress.org Plugin Repository

These additional restrictions explicitly apply to any distribution via the WordPress.org plugin repository. They were originally introduced as a measure against unauthorised modifications and distribution — particularly by “nullers” who remove licensing and attribution information. It is a fortunate coincidence that these restrictions also protect against incidents like the Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) supply chain attack. In the ACF incident, users had no way of knowing the plugin had been substantially altered until after installation, clearly illustrating a scenario of misrepresentation. To protect users and maintain trust in WP fail2ban, modified versions must strictly adhere to these terms and clearly identify themselves as derivatives.

Assets and Non-Code Materials: NOT GPL

All assets included with WP fail2ban, such as images, logos, and other non-code materials, are NOT COVERED by the GPLv3 license. These assets remain proprietary and MUST NOT be included in modified works. You MUST obtain explicit permission from the copyright holder if you wish to use or distribute these assets separately or within your modified versions.
